What to Do After Death

All members

First, it is VERY IMPORTANT that your friends, household staff, neighbors, etc. know that you are a member of the 24 Hour Association and to contact us upon your death. Should they, instead, call 911 or the police, a complicated process ensues that can take weeks to navigate. Of course, if foul play is suspected, do call the police. And if death is imminent, have a doctor see the person prior.

As soon as the 24 Hour Association is contacted, we take the following steps:

•       Confirming the name and phone number of the attending doctor.

•       Contacting the funeral home for collection and disposition of the body.

•       Contacting next of kin and/or executor.

•       Contacting family and friends included in the member’s application.

•       Helping to arrange a religious or other service as requested.

•       Registering the death with the Mexican Civil Registry.

•       Obtaining and providing a Mexican death certificate to the appropriate survivor.

What else needs to be done?

Foreign residents are required to notify Mexican Immigration within 90 days when your spouse dies and also change your marital status. We cannot do this for you.

U.S. Citizens

1.  A family member, friend or executor must notify Social Security of the death to end the deceased’s benefits. The number to do so is +1.301.985.8843. Dial 0 for the switchboard and ask to be transferred to the Social Security office.

2.  According to the U.S. Embassy Special Consulate Services Office in Mexico City, survivors or executors of U.S. citizens who have assets in the U.S. and die outside of the country must apply for an Electronic Consular Report of Death Abroad (eCRDA). The U.S. Embassy says those without assets in the U.S. do not need an eCRDA. Several people can apply for the eCRDA using the convenient, online form.

A.  The surviving spouse, who will be asked to submit the marriage certificate.

B.  Next of kin, (i.e., daughter, a son, or a sibling) who will be asked to prove a relationship, such as a birth certificate.

C.  Legal representative or executor who will be asked to submit the will in which s/he is named executor.

The 24 Hour Association team has helped the families of several members complete the online eCRDA  form.

Canadian Citizens

1.  A spouse, next of kin or legal representative must contact Service Canada to report the death and stop pension payments or any other government payments, i.e., disability.

2.  The Canadian passport should be cancelled at the nearest passport office or at any point of service in Mexico.

3.  Contact the Embassy of Canada in Mexico  with questions - +52.55.5724.7900.
